The persons and animals of Manakamana

Manakamana (Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez, 2013) is an ethnographic study of some individuals on their journey to the Manakamana temple in Nepal.

The ascent or descent on the gondola lasts about 11 minutes. The first half of the film documents the ascents; after the ascent with the goats, in the second half of the film we descend with the individuals. Rather than discuss the film, I thought a collection of images might highlight its wonders.

I attempted to freeze the flow of (non-)action and add a painterly quality to the stills. Hopefully the beauty of the shot gets across.
