Eisenstein would be embarrassed by late 20th Century Hollywood’s adoption of the montage of attractions. But his political and aesthetic discontent matters less than the influence of his methods. Watching Resident Evil in 2020 is like watching a film from an era long gone, however, as the first decade of the 21st century sounded the death knell of montage. The post-2010 result? A completely de-aestheticized cinema whereby editing is discussed only when it’s terrible. Contemporary action cinema overemphasizes realism and continuity editing in a medium that requires neither. Eisenstein is dead. Who will have the courage to resurrect him?
