Free Guy is a superb example of pastiche, i.e., the deliberate use of cultural artifacts and objects without critique, a “blank parody” (Jameson). The movie is full of the refuse of twentieth and twenty-first century popular culture. Or, is there some deliberate irony when Keys (Keery) asks Antwan (Waititi) why he doesn’t make an original game? Why not make an original movie? Perhaps because the safety net of nostalgia offsets the cost of filmmaking (ready for the next Star Wars TV series?!). Does that take the fun out of Free Guy? Not a chance – it was a fun ride.
