The Innocents is innovative because one could approach it from any number of angles: it’s a horror film, supernatural fantasy, science fiction, coming-of-age, or tale of immigrants, outsiders, and people with disabilities. I link the film with Haneke‘s White Ribbon and view this as a superhero origin story except the stakes are much smaller and closer to reality. This is what happens if children are given superpowers. Some will kill their parents, others use their gifts to strengthen their bonds. However you want to see The Innocents, this isn’t one to be missed. A much better attempt than Brightburn.
